4 Step Guide On How To Sell A Car In Malaysia

How to sell your car in Malaysia?

Selling a car is not as simple as normal buy-and-sell that we see at the market, where the willing buyer can just drive off with the car after making payments to the willing seller. There is more to just paying the required considerations! Don’t know how and where to start? Here’s a simple guide for you to follow!

Step 1: Find out your car’s worth

This means that you have to find out how much your car is worth in the market in the present day, or in other words, the financial value of your car. This is an essential step to ensure that you don’t lose out on interest from potential buyers due to higher-than-market prices, and lose out due to underselling your car for what it actually worth!

A simple thing you can do is to search online for advertisements of similar cars and check out the going rate. Be sure to compare apple-to-apple by not only comparing cars of the same models, but also the years of usage and car condition. Other things to keep in mind are modifications to your car, such as having fancy number plates that you paid for (for example, AAA 8055 or AAA 8888). Bumping up the price by a bit helps to curb potential bargaining from our fellow Malaysians who are accustomed to bargaining too!

Step 2: Intention to sell is made known to everybody

People have to know that you are selling your car before you can even find potential buyers! So inform your friends and family members, as word-of-mouth may help to spread the news faster than flames! Another effective way to find potential buyers is to advertise your car in the newspaper and appropriate online platforms such as social media and trust-worthy car bidding platforms such as ezAuto’s!

Step 3: Take your car for an inspection

This is a crucial and compulsory step as PUSPAKOM has to determine if your car is safe to be driven on the road and whether your car is legal. In terms of legality of your car, PUSPAKOM will have to make sure that your car is not cloned. This means that your car’s number plate cannot be a duplicate on another car of the same model (for example, illegal replication of number plates on stolen cars!).

That aside, PUSPAKOM will also have to determine there are no illegal modifications to your car before you sell it off. Common illegal modification is tinted glass that is darker than what is allowed. This will have to be removed before you go for the inspection.

To get all of these checked out, just head over to PUSKAPOM to make an inspection appointment and pay the appropriate fee.

Alternatively, at ezAUTO.MY, you could come and get a free inspection and valuation where our inspection process are one of the few in the country that is in compliance with the relevant regulatory and government agency requirements.

Step 4: Transferring ownership of the car

The final step is to make sure the car legally belongs to the buyer now by making sure ownership transfers from you to the buyer. Be sure to get everything paid up for your car first before you legally transfer the car to the buyer!

The transferring of ownership will be carried out at the Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ). Both buyer and seller have to be present during the process. All you have to do is fill up a transfer of ownership form and do a fingerprint scan to confirm your identity and your car is good to go with its new owner!
